Changing Negative Thought Patterns

Your mentee may become bogged down with negative thoughts. The short questionnaire here asks some incisive questions to quickly get them into a positive frame of mind.

Questions 

  1. What would be the worst thing that could happen by doing or saying this?
  2. What evidence do you have?
  3. What logic is there in that answer?
  4. What would be the worst thing that could happen if you do not do this?
  5. What do you have to lose from this?
  6. What do you have to gain from this?
  7. What can you learn from this experience?

Changing the Thought Pattern

  1. What is making you anxious or worried? Specify the situation.
  2. State the worst thing that could possibly happen.
  3. Is the above life-threatening?
  4. If the worst were to happen, how would you resolve it?
  5. To improve upon the worst possible outcome, list the specific steps you will take.
  6. If you were to take these steps, how would you feel about the outcome?
  7. Future pace. If any further thought patterns interfere, repeat.
